Dan Dare Space Ship c1956 with 50 motor
The design is from the Eagle Book of Balsa Models. The curator
built the first of these in 1956 flying it along a fishing line
stretched down the garden.
Hidden image shows the opened motor with fuel pellet,
gauze and fuse. The gauze prevented the small jet hole becoming
blocked with ash from the burning fuel. The fuse burned in a similar
way to the old cowboy gunpowder trail. Modern motors, fuel, etc.
are still available but are now called Jet-x.
